</div><p>We all know now that Omega 3 fats are good for us. Science has established that Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are very important for our health. But what are good Omega 3 sources that we can use to add more Omega 3 fats to our diet?</p>
<p>There is more than one Omega 3 fatty acid. There are in fact a number. Principally there are 3. DHA and EPA are found mainly in marine-based sources such as fish. There is also a plant-based Omega 3 fatty acid called ALA.</p>

<p>ALA is only found in plants.</p>
<p>DHA is the most important of these 3 Omega 3 fats. DHA is responsible in large part for our brain development.</p>
<p>Unlike the other 2 fatty acids, ALA is not as important. That is because it cannot be synthesised directly into our bodies in our body to DHA first. This process is inefficient and therefore ALA is not a good source of high levels of Omega 3 fats.</p>
<p>Of these reasons the best food sources of Omega 3 fatty acids is found in fish. The American Heart Association recognises the benefits of eating more fish and suggests we do so. However there is a problem. Fish is contaminated with toxins such as Mercury and the FDA tells us not to eat too much.</p>
<p>So it seems clear that we shouldn&#8217;t eat fish daily despite fish being an excellent Omega 3 source. The only way to take daily safe doses of Omega 3 fatty acids is to take the best fish oil supplements. Note though that although the best fish oil supplements are cleaned not all supplements are as good as others.</p>
<p>Of course you can also add more plant-based Omega 3 sources as well. For instance you can cook with canola oil or olive oil. And flax seed oil is also very high as a source of Omega 3 ALA.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re vegetarian you cannot in many cases take fish oil supplements. However it is possible to get your Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from vegetarian Omega 3 sources. It is now possible to get vegetarian DHA supplements that are sourced from algae.</p>
